Going to the gym

Getting a good work out goes hand in hand with staying well hydrated. Going to the gym is always a sweaty affair, so it is important to keep some refreshing water with you during every visit. As such, no well-equipped gym goer would be caught heading for a workout without a freshly filled reusable water bottle!

Finding the Best Gym Bottle

In this review, we’ll take a look at the best gym water bottles, a selection of stainless steel bottles which I’ve identified as personal favorite gym companions. Each of these bottles is exceptionally durable and leak proof, meaning they are excellent water bottles for working out since you don’t have to worry about dropping them or breaking the, and you can easily seal them up and toss them into your gym bag without worrying about leaks.Let’s get right into it!

The SIGG 1 Liter Traveler’s Water Bottle (~$17 on Amazon.com)

SIGG 1 Liter Aluminum Water Bottle

Made in Switzerland, SIGG bottles are constructed from high quality aluminum and feature SIGG’s EcoLiner technology. Free from BPA and other harmful materials, the Traveler’s Water Bottle has always left my water tasting clean even after its spent a long time in the bottle.

While quite durable, the aluminum used in the SIGG is definitely not as strong as some of its stainless steel competitors. Regardless, the SIGG is unlikely to crack or fracture during regular use. The leak proof construction never failed me on any trip to the gym, and overall I have no complaints about SIGG aluminum water bottles for what they are.

However, the SIGG Traveler’s Bottle is not insulated. That was my main motivation for upgrading to our next contender….

Klean Kanteen 20 Ounce Stainless Steel Reusable Water Bottle (~$25 on Amazon.com)

Klean Kanteen 20 Ounce Wide Mouth Stainless Steel Water Bottle

I remember the day I decided my SIGG was lacking a crucial feature. Leaving the gym, my buddy jostled his Klean Kanteen and I heard the rattle of ice cubes inside. Suddenly a veil was lifted: I need an insulated water bottle! What could be more refreshing during my work out breaks than some sips of ice water? I could even take a refreshing smoothie with me and have it stay frozen… the possibilities were limitless.

Maybe it wasn’t quite that dramatic, but when I got my first insulated Klean Kanteen, I was pretty stoked. The wide mouth made it easy to fill with ice, which was enough to keep my water nice and frosty for most of the day. With 100% stainless steel interior and exterior, I never had any problems with odors or taste contamination, and cleaning was a breeze.

My Klean Kanteen was pretty great. I might still have it, but I accidentally left it on a bus after a long journey. I decided it was time to move on to a new work out water bottle.

Hydro Flask 40 Ounce Stainless Steel Water Bottle (~$34 on Amazon.com)

Hydro Flask 40 Ounce Wide Mouth Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Having owned an insulated stainless steel water bottle, I decided that was definitely the way to go from here on out. So after mourning my Klean Kanteen for about 5 minutes, I ordered a 40 Ounce Hydro Flask and have never looked back. It does everything my Klean Kanteen did, and actually seems to have far better insulation, although I have never done a side-by-side test.

But what really made it feel like an upgrade was doubling in size from the 20 ounce Klean Kanteen up to my 40 ounce Hydro Flask, which I found far more accommodating to my work out needs. Unless it happens to be a super hot day, filling up my Hydro Flask affords me plenty of water for my whole gym trip. I don’t need to refill it even if I drink some in the car on the way there or back, and I get plenty of water while I’m exercising.

One particular accessory makes the Hydro Flask extra friendly as a gym bottle: the Straw-Lid. Equipped with a Straw-Lid, I can drink from my Hydro Flask even while I’m actively exercising on the treadmill or doing something similar. The design of the straw-lid is far more leak-proof than most other water bottles with straws I’ve come across, which makes it even more gym-friendly.

Size Matters for a Work Out Water Bottle

Both the Klean Kanteen and Hydro Flasks mentioned in this review are available in a variety of sizes. When determining which water bottle is the best for the gym, take into account a few factors:

1. How much water you really drink at the gym,

2. How much extra weight you’ll have to carry in your gym bag (water is heavy!)

3. If you’re getting an insulated bottle to put ice in, remember that water expands when it freezes, so with ice cubes added you’ll have a bit less total water than a full bottle would otherwise.

Hit the Gym!

Remember to have fun and stay hydrated! Exercise is one of the most rewarding things anyone can do in their day to day life, and proper hydration helps all the more to make it a great and fulfilling experience. Don’t forget to pack your gym bottle every time you go for a work out, your body will thank you!

How Important is Staying Hydrated at the Gym?

According to this handy fact sheet from the United Kingdom’s Natural Hydration Council, studies have demonstrated that dehydration can reduce performance in both aerobic endurance exercises as well as strength-based exercises. The fact sheet continues:

“There is also some evidence that inadequate hydration
can adversely effect hormonal and metabolic responses such as how we burn carbohydrate and fat when doing resistance exercises. This could have implications for performance or weight management.”

This truly goes to drive home how important proper hydration is for anyone in physical fitness. Not only does it allow you to perform better (and in the gym that can mean progress towards your goals,) but it is also essential for the functioning of the underlying biological mechanisms you are hoping to engage when you exercise! Something as simple as your gym water bottle (and its contents, of course) is an essential ingredient in your workout routine.

Keep it Clean!

Once you’ve finally found the best water bottle for the gym, make sure you keep it clean! There is nothing worse than a dirty, smelly water bottle which is infrequently washed and improperly cared for. Even if you just use your water bottle when you go to the gym, it is still getting full of all kinds of bacteria and contaminants every time you use it! Make sure you wash that thing! Can’t Decide?

If you find yourself unable to pick between the insulated Klean Kanteen or the Hydro Flask, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Whether it is for the gym or just for everyday use, sorting out the winner between these two fierce competitors can be tough. Do all of these fit in the cupholders on equipment at the gym, i.e. the treadmill or eliptical cupholders? Thanks.

    1. Jacob says:

The 40oz Hydro Flask will not fit in the cupholders, but the other two listed should be able to fit in most standard cup holders.
