Whenever you select a new water bottle, there is always a decision to be made of how practically sized it is for your everyday needs. While it might be nice in theory to have a great-big behemoth of a bottle to make sure you always have as much water as you need, in practice you might find this to be a little too cumbersome. But what if you could have high-capacity when you need it and minimal foot print when you don’t, all in the same bottle? As it turns out, you can. Meet the Hydaway Collapsible Water Bottle.
Capable of folding up into a tiny disc when it’s not full of water, the Hydaway can easily slip into your pocket when empty and collapsed. But when fully expanded, the Hydaway is capable of holding up to 21 ounces of water – pretty impressive for something that can collapse down to about 1.25 inches in height and is only 4.25 inches across.

A Portable, Lightweight Water Bottle: Reviewing the Hydaway Collapsible Water Bottle
We are no strangers to collapsible water bottles: way back in September 2015, we ran a piece about the Best Collapsible Water Bottles, looking at some of the top options on the market back then. Looking at these bottles now, we see an immediate contrast offered by the Hydaway Bottle. Where other collapsible water bottles are more or less just little hydration bladders with a drinking spout on them, the Hydaway Bottle takes an entireely different route to accomplish the goal of collapsible water bottle.
With a durable yet pliable plastic construction, the Hydaway is easy and even fun to collapse and expand. At its smallest, the Hydaway is small enough to toss into any bag or even your pocket until its time to fill it up. When you want to fill it up, simply remove the twist-off lid and expand the bottle. You can either expand it completely, or just pull the top portion up if you don’t need a full 21 ounces and still want something small and lightweight.
Giving Collapsible Water Bottles A Try
In the photo above we see the Hydaway Collapsible Bottle expanded in its “midway” position, which I would estimate holds about 2/3rds of the bottle’s full advertised 21-ounce capacity. While I typically fill my Hydaway up completely, having this midway position adds a nice additional flexibility as you can collapse the bottle down a bit after consuming some of its contests.
When filled with water, the Hydaway feels pretty cool in the hands and is fun to squeeze and play with. While drinking from it you can give the pliable plastic a little squeeze to get some extra water out of the drinking spout. Drinking from the bottle is easy and its flip-top drinking spout is very good at keeping the bottle from leaking, assuming you make sure to fully secure it before putting it away. The screw-top lid also does its job of forming a water tight seal, making the Hydaway very well leak-proofed.
Using the Hydaway Collapsible Bottle Every Day
The Hydaway Bottle is definitely a nifty invention, and its a design we prefer over the old-school quasi-hydration-bag collapsible water bottles we’ve used in the past. My favorite application so far has been going through airports, where stringent TSA requirements prevent you from carrying more than two ounces of liquid into the terminal. The Hydaway is perfect for this application, as it can be collapsed to practically flat and stored in my carry-on until I’m past security, where it unfolds into a conveniently sized 21-ounce bottle perfect for keeping hydrated on my flight.
In terms of design and execution we give the Hydaway good marks. It performs its function well, feels very durable, and should be long-lasting with proper use and care. One complaint we do have is the slight chemical flavor it imparts to our water. Even after repeated washing and lots of use, we find that storing water in the Hydaway for extended periods (6+ hours) always leaves the water tasting slightly “off.” However, the flavor is extremely subtle, and not necessarily a deal breaker, as this is something not uncommon among plastic bottles of all sorts.
Final Thoughts and Review Summary
If a collapsible water bottle is your kind of thing, the Hydaway Bottle is certainly one worth investigating. Although we wish collapsible bottles could have a better container material, we understand that the field is more or less limited strictly to plastics, and with this limitation there might be the occasionally “plasticy” taste in whatever is contained in them.
But other than this one complaint, we don’t have a bad thing to say about the Hydaway. In comparison to other collapsible water bottles, we prefer its more structured design. It is easy to use, durable, and performs pretty much as advertised. With a pricetag of around $20, it is also pretty affordable and offers a respectable 21-ounce capacity, which is a good everyday carry amount providing plenty of hydration potential without too much bulk.
If portability is of prime importance in your search for the perfect bottle, inevitably you’ll come across the portable possibilities of collapsible bottles. The Hydaway offers its own unique and innovative take on this simple idea, providing portability seekers with an easy option to stay hydrated and lightweight on the go.
We award the Hydaway Collapsible Water Bottle 4/5 stars.
