In 2015 the water bottle has become an indispensable part of everyday life. Providing us with a portable source of hydration, water bottles are a humble accessory with big impacts on everyday health and overall well being when put to good use. They are also something of a fashion accessory, making a statement about individuality and complimenting individual fashion styles or wardrobe choices. In this article, we’ll explore the best water bottles on the market with names like Hydro Flask, Glasstic, MiiR and many more.

But before we dive into the specifics, lets take a look at just what options are kicking around. There are a lot of water bottle companies on the market today, producing a huge range of different bottles. Picking the best water bottle means determining if you want a filter, what type of material you want to store your water in, and of course finding something that looks good and works well. Below we’ve taken the time to highlight some of the different options and grouped them into various categories to make it easy to see which water bottle companies are making which types of water bottles.

Filtered vs Unfiltered

The first choice for your water bottle is deciding if you want to include a filter or not. If your definitely looking for a filtered bottle, or unsure of what benefits a filter has to offer, check out our “Filtered Water Bottle Buyers Guide” to learn everything you need to know to buy the best filtered water bottle for you needs.

Material Selection

The most important aspect of a water bottle is its capacity to store your water. The material which comes into contact with your drinking water should be the point of most intense scrutiny in any purchasing decision. The most common materials used are: Molecular structure of plastic - Materials selection

  • Plastics: Many water bottles are made from durable modern plastics. These tend to be relatively cheap to buy and highly durable. However, their production is not necessarily environmentally friendly and some cheaper plastics may leave water with an odd flavor. Cheap plastic can also be permeable to air, potentially letting your water pickup strange flavors from its environment. Fortunately, high quality plastic bottles have largely solved this problem and there are plenty of desirable plastic water bottles on the market. Plastics used in water bottles are food-grade and modern bottles are almost all free of BPA and phthalates.
  • Glass: Although potentially fragile, glass may well be the best container material as it is not permeable to air, doesn’t impart any flavor, and has by far the longest history of safe human usage. The manufacturing of glass bottles is also the most environmentally friendly water bottle manufacturing method. To solve the issue of fragility, many modern glass water bottle companies now produce their bottles with a variety of features to help prevent the glass from breaking, such as silicon sleeves, encasing the glass under a layer of plastic, or futuristic shatter-proof innovations like Pure Safe-Shell. • Stainless Steel: While stainless steel suffers from a very environmentally unfriendly production process, stainless steel water bottles are in many ways the best available on the market today. When it comes to durability they are unrivaled – and stainless steel bottles are also king as far as insulation goes. Although it has a relatively short history of use, stainless steel has a great safety record as a container material (especially compared to plastics) and never leaves any strange flavors in the contents.

  1. Michael says:

I am wondering why you don’t have any stainless steel options between 20 ounce and 64. I had a 20 ounce water bottle but stopped using it daily because it didn’t have enough in it to satisfy, yet the 64 ounce ones are just too bulky for daily use at work and the gym. I ride a motorcycle as often as I can, so glass is not an option to toss in my saddlebags, and I prefer the durability of the stainless steel to a plastic bottle. Do you have any recommendations in a 30-40 ounce size in stainless steel?
