If you’re unfamiliar with the growler, you can sort of think of them as the heavyweight champions of the water bottle world. Aiming for maximum storage capacity, growlers are an ideal solution for storing hefty quantities of any beverage. Modern insulated growlers far exceed the capacities of most water bottles, with 64 ounces being more or less the standard baseline for classifying as a growler. In this review of our top 5 picks, we’ll examine a variety of popular growlers to help you find the best option.
All of the growlers we’ve selected for this comparison are 64 ounces and feature double-wall vacuum insulation. This makes everyone of them an ideal solution for storing beverages hot and cold practically all day. These growlers lend themselves to a massive amount of versatility. Fill them up with enough ice water to accompany you on an all-day hike for refreshment and hydration whenever you need it. Or toss in some hot soup in the morning to have a meal still warm and ready to eat in the evening. You can even use a growler as a great secondary water storage to keep in your car or add to your hiking kit so you know you always have plenty of water.
Let’s take a look at some growlers!
Selecting the Best Insulated Growlers: Examining & Comparing the 64 Ounce Giants
The formidable 64oz Hydro Flask Growler is an item which has accompanied me almost everywhere for the past year. Always in my car or with me on hikes and camping trips, I rely on the large capacity of the Hydro Flask growler to ensure that I can meet any hydration needs for myself or others no matter where I might end up.
Despite suffering the abuses of constant handling and journeys into the wilderness, my Hydro Flask growler has held up remarkably well, though it has now acquired a small dent from a particularly nasty fall. This has done nothing to impede its function. The insulation is the same exceptional quality which exceeds the advertised 12 hours hot/24 hours cold that we have praised before when we crowned Hydro Flask the best bottle of 2015 and examined the brand’s whole line in our review of Hydro Flask.
Easy to fill and clean thanks to the wide-mouth opening, the Hydro Flask growler is a joy to own and something I would certainly replace if lost or somehow broken. But breaking is not much of a concern, as this solid hunk of stainless steel doesn’t seem like it will be damaged beyond use any time soon.
(UPDATE: Since we published this article, Hydro Flask has stepped up their insulation game with a new technology called Honey Comb Insulation. Incorporated into the new Flex Cap lid on their new bottles, this lid steps up their already top notch insulation. Read our feature on the new Flex Cap Hydro Flasks or visit the Amazon listing for the 64oz Hydro Flask Wide-Mouth Flex Cap Growler.)
Coming in at our #2 pick is this stylish insulated Klean Kanteen equipped with SwingLok. Like Hydro Flask above, Klean Kanteen is another brand which has earned much distinction here at Hydration Anywhere, earning the title of best water bottle 2016. This neat growler is a great example of Klean Kanteen’s ingenuity and exceptional execution in manufacturing. An extremely durable and well-crafted growler, this Klean Kanteen boasts double-walled vacuum insulation for 24 hours cold/12 hours hot.
The SwingLok cap is a neat addition and works very well for sealing the bottle. However, one thing about this growler which might bother some is it has something of a narrower mouth than many other growlers. This can make filling it with solids like ice cubes a bit harder, not to mention makes cleaning a little trickier. Regardless, there is still an ample opening on the growler’s mouth, so the issue is not too bad, though it is definitely narrower than the Hydro Flask growlers.
MiiR is a respected name in the insulated water bottle world, with their sleek no-nonsense products performing admirably and stacking up to leading brands like Hydro Flask or Klean Kanteen. With this Miir 64 Ounce Growler you get a high quality 18/8 food-grade stainless steel bottle featuring great double-wall vacuum insulation.
This MiiR Growler resembles the Klean Kanteen growler we highlighted above in a few ways. It features the same lid design which Klean Kanteen called “SwingLok,” though MiiR has not offered their own fancy name for this old-school stopper. It works very well for leak-proofing and ensuring you’ll never misplace the lid. However, also like the Klean Kanteen growler, the MiiR has a tapered neck which leads to a somewhat narrow mouth compared to other growlers. The mouth on the MiiR is actually a bit larger than the one on the Klean Kanteen.

If you’re on a strict budget, this 45 Degree Latitude Growler is probably the pick for you. In design the 45 Degree Latitude growler more or less mimics our #1 pick of the Hydro Flask growler, but for about half the price. Comparing them side-by-side through daily usage, there is very little difference between the brand named Hydro Flask growler and its generic 45 Degree Latitude imitator.
Using 18/8 food-grade stainless steel and the same type of double-walled vacuum insulation employed by Hydro Flask, the 45 Degree Latitude achieves very similar results to its more expensive competitors. We’ve actually looked at this 45 Degree Latitude growler before, in our feature on Generic Hydro Flasks. Back then we regarded the bottle for its budget price and quality design, and little has changed. Generic is not always such a bad thing!
Finally on our list we have something a little different. This huge Stanley Classic Growler is quite a growler, and quite a well put together one at that. It has a few features which no other growlers on this list include, like its big handle and super convenient flip cap with lock. The handle makes the Stanley Classic extremely easy to pour from, making it an ideal vessel for storing beverages to be dispensed later. Thanks to the insulation, you can serve at ideal drinking temperature even if you’re far from a stove or fridge. Be it beer, coffee, or whatever finds its way into the Stanley Classic, it will be ready to serve whenever you’re ready to enjoy it.
Just like the rest of the contenders on this list, the Stanley Classic makes use of 18/8 food-grade stainless steel and double-wall vacuum insulation construction. Advertised as keeping liquids hot for 12 hours or cold for 24, we actually think Stanley’s advertising might be a little modest in their appraisal of the Classic Growler’s abilities. By far the best option for pouring on this list, the Stanley Classic is a great companion on hikes, pic-nics, or any family or group outing.
Also worth checking out is the Stanley Classic Growler Set which not only includes the Stanley Classic Growler, but also throws in four cold-serve sleeves – nifty little insulated cups perfect for drinking from on the go after being filled from the Classic Growler. The cups insulate your hot or cold beverage and are also nearly indestructible with their stainless steel construction.
Honorable Mention for the BIGGEST Growler – DrinkTanks Juggernaut
When we wrote this review we decided that, generally speaking, a “growler” is a 64 ounce insulated bottle. While that is still generally true, we’ve had the honor of testing a bottle which defies this – and many other – common descriptions of a growler. The utterly massive 128 ounce DrinkTanks Juggernaut is a true beast of a growler. It is capable of holding a full gallon of liquid! Advertised as the biggest growler on the market, it is certainly the biggest growler (or biggest bottle of any kind) that we have ever owned or reviewed. Packing quality 24 hour cold/12 hour hot insulation and high quality 18/8 food-grade stainless steel construction, the Juggernaut is an extremely well put together growler.
In addition to being by far the biggest, it has some interesting features including a beer Keg Cap Accessory which turns the DrinkTanks growler into a CO2 charged portable beer keg that can dispense some delicious refreshing brews from your massive growler at the press of a lever.
That’s All the Growlers For Now!
If you’ve been through this list and still haven’t found the growler for you, don’t worry! There are still a ton of other insulated growlers to explore on Amazon! Or maybe a growler just isn’t what you’re looking for? If you want something which boasts the same impressive insulation but is maybe a little smaller and easier to carry, be sure to head over to our Best Insulated Water Bottles article or Best Water Bottles 2017 comparison to have a look at some other possibilities.
